Mark is the only one in his family who isn't excited about having a new stepfather.  But the prospect of taking the train cross-country to San Francisco when his step-father has business there does sound like fun. Mark finds himself having a good time until early one morning when he is shaken out of bed by a huge earthquake.  Soon Mark and his family are swept up in the horror of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
